Your wedding deserves a setting as bold and unique as your love story. Gorton Community Center is all about giving you the freedom to create a celebration that’s unapologetically yours. With affordable pricing, flexible spaces, and total creative control, this venue flips the script on traditional weddings.

While it’s not a full-service venue, Gorton offers a rare combination of flexibility, low rental rates, and access to multiple spaces under one roof—making it a standout option on Chicago’s North Shore. Plus, the venue’s proximity to Lake Michigan allows for easy access to beachside portraits, giving couples the best of both worlds: an elegant reception and timeless coastal backdrops.

Price

One of Gorton Community Center’s biggest appeals is its affordability without compromise on quality or experience. While many venues with similar rental windows charge $5,000–$8,000, Gorton’s standard pricing is much more accessible. For a 2025 wedding, our couple (who did receive a slight discount through a family connection) rented the Stuart Room for both cocktail hour and reception for just $2,100. This included rental access from 8 a.m. to midnight.

Gorton offers several rentable rooms to suit a range of event sizes and styles:

  • Stuart Community Room – The most popular for wedding receptions, this bright, neutral space can comfortably seat up to 150 guests.

  • John & Nancy Hughes Theater – A beautiful and unique option for ceremonies or grand entrances.

  • Solarium – A sun-drenched side space ideal for cocktail hour or indoor portraits.

  • Nagel Room – A flexible room often used for staging, childcare, or vendor meals.

Planning Process

Planning with Gorton Community Center is refreshingly straightforward. All vendors were invited to a site walkthrough months in advance, which allowed us to finalize layout and logistics well ahead of the big day.

Megan Engelberg, our main point of contact, was always responsive and clear in communication. She charged just $50 per overtime hour—far more generous than most venues—and provided highboy cocktail tables at no additional cost.

One of Gorton’s greatest strengths is its flexibility. Couples have the freedom to bring in the vendors they love and customize every detail, from catering to decor. The only major restrictions were that anything hung needed to be installed with painter’s tape (no adhesives, nails, or push pins), and no confetti, glitter, or rice was allowed.

Day-Of Execution

Your wedding day should feel like a celebration crafted just for you, and Gorton Community Center makes that possible. For our 2025 couple, the day started with a peaceful morning, as they prepared and posed for portraits at their family’s nearby home. The ceremony at Saint Mary’s was stunning, followed by photos on the lakeshore.

Meanwhile, back at Gorton, the space transformed into the perfect reception venue. Guests were greeted with cocktails and live music inside the sunny Solarium, a warm and lively welcome before transitioning into the Stuart Room for dinner and dancing. Gorton’s staff was incredibly helpful—available at every turn to assist with questions, help carry decor and catering items, and lend a hand during breakdown and load-out at the end of the night.
