Union League Club of Chicago Review
Heirloom Event Company does not receive a commission for positive reviews or venue referrals for the Union League Club of Chicago.
If the defining aesthetic of 2024 and 2025 weddings had a name, it would likely be “Old Money.” And there may be no Chicago venue that embodies that timeless elegance better than the Union League Club of Chicago.
This historic private club has long been a Chicago institution. For couples seeking classic city sophistication, it offers a truly memorable backdrop. A grand staircase welcomes guests into a building filled with wood-paneled walls, historic artwork, and rooms layered with over a century of history. The architecture feels stately and intentional, exactly the kind of setting that instantly elevates a wedding celebration.
With several grand spaces available, our couple chose President’s Hall for both their ceremony and reception—a dramatic ballroom with soaring 28-foot ceilings that feels every bit as impressive as it sounds.
Price
For a Friday wedding in President’s Hall with approximately 130 guests, the total venue, food, and beverage investment came to roughly $33,000 before taxes and service charges.
The club’s base wedding package begins at $145 per guest for members ($150 for non-members) and includes:
Five passed hors d’oeuvres per person
Three-course plated meal (soup or salad, entrée, and wedding cake)
Four-hour “club” bar package
Dinner wine service
Use of the club’s wedding amenities, including floor-length ivory damask linens, charger plates, dining chairs, and dance floor
A one-bedroom executive suite for the couple on their wedding night
Our couple added several upgrades to personalize the evening, including a premium bar package, signature cocktails (a margarita and a dirty martini), and late-night snacks featuring Chicago favorites from Lou Malnati’s—thin-crust pizza and mini Chicago-style hot dogs.
With taxes, gratuities, and upgrades included, their final invoice landed just under $30,000, right in line with their original budget.
For a historic downtown Chicago venue with in-house catering and built-in architectural character, the pricing is surprisingly competitive.

Planning Process
Because the Union League Club operates as a private club, couples typically need to be members—or have a family connection—to host an event here. Once booked, couples are paired with an internal catering sales manager who oversees menus, diagrams, and general logistics.
Even with strong in-house coordination, having a planner is still extremely helpful for two reasons: historic building restrictions and multi-floor logistics.
As a protected landmark, the club has strict policies about attaching anything to the building. Nothing can be taped, nailed, or affixed to the walls or columns. All signage, florals, and décor must be freestanding.
Fortunately, the architecture already carries much of the visual weight. The space requires very little décor to feel elevated.
The venue also spans several floors, which creates a unique event flow:
Bridal suite on the 12th floor
Groom’s suite on the 8th floor
Cocktail hour in the library on the 4th floor
Ceremony and reception in President’s Hall on the 2nd floor
Elevators move slowly and are often shared with guests, so our team spent much of the pre-ceremony window transporting décor, signage, and personal items between floors.
The upside is that many rentals are already included. Tables, linens, chairs, and votive candles are provided in-house, which keeps outside rental costs relatively low. And because the club’s catering and bar teams are highly experienced, the in-house service model never felt limiting.

Day-Of Execution
Overall, the wedding day ran smoothly thanks to the club’s experienced banquet staff and strong collaboration between vendors. From guest arrival to late-night snacks, service felt polished and attentive. Even the gentleman stationed at the guest check-in in the lobby jumped in to help with a room flip.
That said, there was one notable challenge.
Some floor plan details were not fully communicated from the catering sales manager to the banquet team. As a result, our planning team had to adjust portions of the décor layout from the original design plan. While we were able to pivot quickly, it wasn’t ideal, and the bride later mentioned noticing the change.
The ceremony-to-reception room flip was also one of the most intense transitions we’ve experienced.
Because décor cannot be preset along the sides of the ballroom or staged nearby, every element must be placed during the flip window. That setup included two bars (one double bar), 14 guest tables, extensive florals, dozens of candles and candelabras, and custom signage.
With every vendor team fully engaged, the turnaround was completed successfully—but it required precise coordination and a lot of hands on deck.

Value
The Union League Club of Chicago is not a blank canvas venue—and that’s exactly the point. The building’s history, architecture, and formality create an atmosphere that already feels polished before a single floral arrangement is added. For couples who love classic Chicago architecture and timeless elegance, it delivers an unmistakable sense of place.
For those drawn to the “Old Money” aesthetic and classic club atmosphere, the Union League Club offers a wedding setting that feels both historic and deeply Chicago.
